The Effects of Social Media on One’s Self Image.
Teenagers all over the world have created social media accounts for themselves, whether that’s on Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok, Twitter, etc. Social media for teens has created a place where they can meet new people, have a creative outlet, and express themselves in a new way. However, a survey conducted by the Class of 2025 at Hackley has shown what teens also experience because of social media and what they really think of it.
Out of thirty-eight students, thirty-three believe social media affects teens’ mental health in a mostly negative way compared to in a positive way. And 44% stated that seeing other people’s posts have made them feel bad about themselves. This could be from seeing a celebrity’s post who has professionals photoshopping their posts, and not understanding why their pictures may not look like that, and of the 38, 30 students follow celebrities on social media. Teens may also see a group of friends and feel excluded. In a more extreme manner, posts could be published spreading rumors or making fun of an individual.
For many, social media has become an outlet for creative individuals where they can shine a spotlight on their pieces and create a platform where they can showcase their creations. On the other hand, these accounts have been a breeding ground for hatred, bullying, and insecurity. Countless stories have been published on cyberbullying.org in an attempt to spread awareness on cyberbullying. They show how many teens have had to be pulled out of their school in order to avoid their bullies who have followed them onto the internet. They also showcase the effects of complete strangers attacking them online.
Overall, social media has introduced a new way to harass peers or strangers in a way where bullies can disguise their identity and avoid consequences. However, their victims’ consequences are how badly their mental health gets affected. So, is social media really worth it when countless people are being damaged internally day by day?
