While Giulia Sorvillo ’25 visited Refresh Beauty Bar for their grand opening, she posed for a picture in their telephone both. She is featured wearing John Galt jeans and a BDG long sleeve.
Hackley has always had a dress code. However, there are parts of the dress code that don’t make sense. One of these is that Hackley does not allow its students to wear blue jeans. To most of us, this rule does not make sense. We can wear black jeans, grey jeans, corduroy pants, etc., but we can’t wear blue jeans, which is just like any other color of jeans. So why should we be allowed to wear blue jeans?
Jeans have been around for about 150 years. At first, jeans were not worn at formal events or in schools. But this changed in the 1980s, when many adults started to wear jeans informally, and they were gradually accepted in workplaces and more formal scenarios over time. Additionally, children and young adults have been wearing jeans regularly since the 1960s. There’s no reason for Hackley to not let us wear jeans, when they have been acceptable in many different settings from the theater to places of worship.
Another problem is that Hackley allows us to wear pants of any other color. If someone were to wear neon green pants, this would be allowed in the dress code, but blue jeans are not. If the reason Hackley does not want people to wear blue jeans is because they are distracting or informal, it does not make sense that someone could wear brightly colored pants but not blue jeans. Neon pants are less formal than most blue jeans.

Clearly, there is no logical reason why blue jeans should not be worn in school. Blue jeans match with almost any top, and can be a lot more comfortable than other pants that are considered to be in dress code. It is extremely important that students, especially high school students, are comfortable in what they wear to school, so they are not distracted and remain focused on their learning. Blue denim is also extremely popular in the fashion industry, so they are easy to shop for since they are sold in most clothing stores at a wide range of prices.
This rule should be addressed and changed, as it is outdated and illogical for students to not be able to wear blue jeans.
