Take Action for the Environment

Air pollution, global warming, acidification, deforesting, marine life endangerment… the list goes on. There are numerous ways that everyone at Hackley can help to make the world a better place and create environmental stability.
One major subject when it comes to the environment is the extensively filled landfills that transport the waste directly into the ocean. FLIK Dining offers metal utensils (ie. forks, knives, spoons) in addition to the plastic utensils displayed in locations such as Allen Hall. Many students continue to use plastic utensils knowing that metal utensils are available due to the re-opening of the cafeteria, and making the simple decision to switch to the metal utensils can limit the amount of waste Hackley collects on a day to day basis.
Another way the community can limit the amount of waste is to utilize the recycling bins that are placed around the school. When it comes to the environment, recycling is one of the best ways to keep the ocean and air safe. In addition to limiting waste, recycling conserves energy, reduces greenhouse gases, and conserves natural resources. Recycling bins are placed in the cafeteria, Akin Common, the quad, and all around campus.
The production of paper has become so common that the release of nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide have begun to pollute the atmosphere. To prevent this, students should begin to keep as much of their notes, readings, and other schoolwork on their computers as they can. With more online document use, the community can reduce the number of toxic gases being released into the air.
Students should also make use of previously owned school supplies instead of buying new ones each year. Reusing supplies will also limit waste; it is unnecessary to buy all new supplies each year when the supplies from years before are still functioning and in good condition to reuse. This includes old binders, folders, pencils, pens, etc.
One final way that students can improve the community is by helping out environmental clubs offered at Hackley such as Lakekeepers. The Lakekeepers head to the Tarrytown reservoirs located at the bottom of the Hackley Hill every few months and pick up trash along the roads. It’s a great opportunity to chat with friends while giving back to the town that students come to each day for school.
Hackley does a lot for the environment, but it is up to the students to act upon it. Take action and give back to the world; whether it’s choosing a metal utensil or volunteering at a club, everyone has the opportunity to make a difference.
