Nothing to lose: John Churchill’s wrestling story

Before any triumph, there is a leap of faith. A moment where the individual takes a chance and tries something new. Uncertain of what the future might hold and what the outcome might be but ready to face the challenges ahead. For junior John Churchill(’23) this was starting wrestling late in his high school years. John was convinced by his friend and NYSAIS wrestling champion Cole Joseph(’23) to start wrestling. Also an avid lacrosse player, John wanted to do a sport that would get him into good shape for his spring season.

When crediting where he found the courage to start as a junior John stated, “I knew I had nothing to lose. All I wanted was to compete and to get in good shape and work hard. You never know what it will be like until you give it a shot.”

In his first year, John Churchill(’23) won the Martin Luther and Ivies Tournament as well as making the finals for NYSAIS. John impressed all season long with quick pins and amazing feats of strength. He showed impressive knowledge of the sport as a beginner and mastered his techniques over the season.

John’s story shows the value in trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone. John offered his advice for someone nervous to try something new; “I would say go for it. At the end of the day you can sit and be happy where you are in your comfort zone but eventually, you have to journey outside the box and adventure a little bit. You never know what’s out there until you try.”

Coming into the season, John’s sole goal was to win one match. After a tremendous year one, his new goals for next year are to win the NYSAIS finals and defend his title at the Ivies tournament. A very eager John said, “I’m excited to see what next year holds for me.”  As John looks to his lacrosse season, he credits his physical conditioning and his grit and will to win to a stellar year of wrestling.
