It is officially spooky season; it’s time to organize your costume, decorate your home to be as spooky as possible, and—above all—get into the right mood by watching as many Halloween movies as you can.

Overall the most popular type of Halloween movies were horror movies but a close second were comedies and cartoons. Senior Brooke likes “really really, scary” movies for Halloween. On the other hand freshman Caitlin enjoys watching “comedy movies, not horror” movies.
The two movies tied for first place were Hocus Pocus and Scream.
- Hocus Pocus: Hocus Pocus was tied for being the most popular Halloween movie. Hocus Pocus is a film about a boy who has to get rid of three witches. Freshman Emma Curran says she likes “Hocus Pocus because it is very nostalgic.” Although Hocus Pocus is thought of as a kids movie, it is a great movie to watch especially if you want something more light hearted than a horror movie.
The people who chose Hocus Pocus as their favorite movie to watch on Halloween stated that the best snack to go along with it was good fall themed popcorn mix, the students added Peanut Butter m&m’s.
- Scream: Scream was tied for first! Scream is a horror movie about a girl being stalked by a man named ghost face a year after her mother was killed. The main reason people enjoy this movie is because it’s thought of as a classic. A student who refused to be quoted said that every year they would get together with their friends and watch Scream together. Scream is thought to be a scary, gory, film, but amongst the highschoolers this was one of the most popular.
The best snacks to go along with Scream are KitKats and Twix candy. These were chosen as popular snacks because they said that when they were stressed or worried they would eat chocolate, so it went very well with this spooky movie.
- Hereditary: Hereditary came in second place! A quick summary of Hereditary: it is about a grieving family who become haunted by a series of bad occurrences, and they discover horrifying secrets about their ancestry. A student who also refused to be quoted said that Hereditary was the best Halloween movie out there but if you decide to watch it be prepared for a scare.
A student named Jake Wade, said “I like to have popcorn when I watch Hereditary” this was a popular response among a variety of students. Another response, though less popular, was candy corn.
- It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, comes in third place. The classic It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is a ‘Peanuts’ tale. Similar to Hocus Pocus, watch this movie if you want a more fun movie to watch on Halloween.
A student who refused to be quoted said that their favorite snack to have with this movie are baked pumpkin seeds. They like to do this because it has become a tradition in their household and they love to have these every Halloween.

- The Purge: The purge is the fourth most popular film across the highschoolers. The Purge is a film about a world where one day of the year all crime including murder becomes legal. Junior Brooke Koffler, said she likes “really, really, scary movies, my favorite is the Purge.” She also goes on to say that she watches the Purge with her dad and her favorite Purge movie is the second one, but if you want to watch it you have to know what you are going into.
Another classic combo that the students who enjoyed watching the Purge liked to eat, is Candy Corn and popcorn. This is a nice combo to have on Halloween because these are very Halloween themed candies.
- The Conjuring: The Conjuring, a film about paranormal investigators and a secluded farmhouse, comes in fifth place. This was also a very popular horror movie. Senior Lillian Beaton states that she loves “horror films, Conjuring is a good one.” She usually watches this film with others, and almost every Halloween. Many other students also recommended The Conjuring.
Some popular snacks to have with this movie were hot cocoa and cookies. Although this isn’t as fall themed as the rest of the snacks, this is always a good go-to to have when watching spooky films.
From funny movies like Hocus Pocus to slashers like Scream to scary psychological thrillers like Hereditary, halloween movies are the way to get into the spooky season, so happy watching!!
