The lunchroom is very unsuitable for students and teachers alike due to sizing issues and the layout of the furniture in it. Lines flood out of the doors on both sides, with students crammed together, not able to get their food for almost the entire beginning half of lunch which spans for 30 minutes. The tables and chairs are also poorly organized around the cafeteria, so many students – even when they get their food – are not able to sit down.
However, some people say that the lunchroom is an appropriate size to fit the whole High School and all faculty members. While people believe that the lunchroom is a fitting size, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors cannot fit in that room. Originally, freshmen and sophomores were supposed to share the room from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then leave so juniors and seniors could eat and have the room from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. However, there are multiple reasons why this does not work. First of all, the juniors and seniors are having lunch during the designated freshmen and sophomore times, making the lines even longer and creating a shortage of tables and chairs. Second, the staff and teachers all have to share one, maybe two tables in the lunchroom which is not suitable for them and extremely unfair.
During the lunch block, students are sitting shoulder to shoulder, not able to eat, and hear each other through the loud noise circling around the room. Although once in a while, a teacher comes and tries to force Juniors and Seniors out of the room, nothing changes, and lunch goes back to a loud crowded mess. One day as my friends and I were searching for a table, we came across an empty one, but soon realized that a group of staff members were sitting there. It was either them or us who got to sit and enjoy lunch, which is a huge problem and should not be happening.
The best possible solution to this issue is to truly enforce the lunch timing between the freshman and sophomores, and the juniors and seniors. Doing this will also solve the problem of overpopulation in the library as well as in the lunchroom. Another solution is to form more than two lines to wait for food, for example, three or four so students do not have to spend so much time waiting in line.
