At Hackley, when icy water bottles are empty, students rush for a refill, just to get a bottle of warm water. Cold water in the early morning is helpful as it wakes tired students up. Next to the freshman hallway, above the stairs lies a warm unfiltered water fountain. A lot of people prefer cold-water, especially early in the morning. When students are interested in refilling their water bottles with cold water, there aren’t many places to go. Significantly, many students have noticed one of the fountains being hot instead of cold. Not only is the fountain warm, though it is also unfiltered, with noticeable fluoride in the water. It is also troubling that the fountain says “unfiltered”, which demonstrates that the fountain may have other germs too.
Not everyone prefers cold water, and having a warm water fountain does enable students and faculty who prefer warm water to fill their bottled water to their preferred temperature. There are no fountains with warm water throughout the school, making it helpful for the many people who do like warm water. Nonetheless, it is not ideal for students and faculty to have an unfiltered water fountain, not only could it be a health issue, though there are not enough water fountains in the High School.
Warm water is overall impractical, and with it being unfiltered, the fountain may lead to more technical issues. There are not many water fountains in the high school, therefore one being warm and unfiltered is significant to students. Because of the issue, students and faculty must travel to far parts of the school just to fill up their water bottle. During class, students may miss a lot of class-time to fill up their water bottles. Although warm water is healthier, the hot water in the lunchroom is hotter and filtered, perfect for hot drinks like tea, and better than warm unfiltered water.
With the recurring issue around the water-fountain, students and faculty are unable to fill their water bottles with cold filtered water. Even though warm water may be preferred, because the fountain has a broken filter, this can lead to unfiltered germs in the water, enabling the Hackley community to get sick. The broken filter may also lead to more issues with the fountain, and is safe to say that the fountain. Most filters are a simplistic fix, and last to around six months. The unfiltered water can be easily solved by replacing or fixing the filter through a technician or plumber. The warm and unfiltered water fountains have been a recurring issue at Hackley, and have a simplistic fix.
