It is intimidating for students of Hackley School to juggle multiple assignments and deadlines, which can cause stress and uncertainty. Considering outside of school activities, sports, and personal issues there is little time to focus on school work. The pressure of this can lead to poor mental health, and trouble with looking forward to the school day.
“I think students struggle with homework because they do not know how to manage their time well enough, leading to procrastination,” said freshman Gracie Eleck.
Gracie’s perspective shows that at times homework load can lead to students to stress.
She said, “If I’m doing a project and already have a ton of homework and then on top of that have a test the next day, I feel extremely overwhelmed because I feel like I cannot complete the assignments to the best of my ability.”
Freshman Nora Esposito believes that teachers should restrict how much homework students are assigned. She said, “Teachers should definitely put into consideration limiting the amount of homework they provide to their students because then students could focus more on extracurricular activities.”
Homework can take away from extracurricular activities such as sports, music, and more. Homework negatively affects a student because it causes their lives to fully revolve around school and not the other tasks in life that are important to them.
In addition, extracurricular activities and homework can lead back to the idea of added stress, and no time to complete all assignments to the best of a student’s ability. If students have all these tasks, they need to learn beneficial time management skills.
Nora still sees homework as important. “I think homework is important because it keeps your brain thinking about a subject outside the classroom, but it still causes a colossal amount of stress,” Nora said.
Although students do not find joy in extra work, it is still known why it is assigned.
Freshman, Jake Sanzenbacher, agrees with the idea of homework adding on extra pressure. Balancing extracurricular activities with school assignments is the root of his resentment toward homework. This is because little to no time management skills with work leads to stress. He said, “Homework causes me stress because I feel as if I have no time to complete it with studying for tests, and outside-of-school activities,” and “I am not able to complete my homework in a timely manner because of my sports.”
Students have busy lives, and having so much more work out of school makes their lives harder. Jake even thinks that teachers should not have homework to begin with.
“I believe that students should not have homework, Jake said.”
