If you are wanting to get back into reading and off your phone, these are the books for you! 5 fast-paced books that will have you on the edge of your seat!
This year I wanted to focus on reading more. I mainly took recommendations from my mom or goodreads. I read a total of 30 books this year and I’ve compiled a list of my top 5 favorites, including genres of dystopian, romance, found family, and fiction. These go in no particular order.
Number 1: Powerless by Lauren Roberts
Powerless is a young adult fantasy novel about a kingdom filled with people with individual magical powers, called elites. Their abilities range from being able to run the quickest, transform into an animal, or have the most strength. In the kingdom named Ilya, people named Ordinaires without powers were banished. When an Ordinary gets chosen to compete in the famous competition between elites, and becomes infatuated with a man named Kai, she realizes how much is at stake. It was the perfect fast-paced book that kept me engaged and looking forward to reading everyday.
Number 2: The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Help is about African Americans working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi, during the early 1960s. It is mainly written from the perspective of three maids who work in their respective houses. It involves some mystery, love, and overall has the reader rooting for the characters within the book. I felt uplifted but also on my toes the whole book, continuing to want to know what was going to happen. I know reading books written earlier can be intimidating and some start off slow or are confusing, but that does not apply to The Help.
Number 3: The Calloway Sisters Series by Becca Richie and Krista Richie
This series is 4 books long and includes two couples, Ryke and Daisy, and Connor and Rose. Ryke is 8 years older than Daisy, who quit modeling because it was feeding into unhealthy habits that she wanted to break. Ryke and Daisy are both free spirits who love to be in nature and experiment with dangerous activities that push the boundaries of life. Rose and Daisy are sisters who come from wealthy families along with Ryke and Daisy. Connor and Rose are both intellects who pretend to hate each other but would really do anything for each other. They are constantly competing, but their relationship is well-loved, articulate and incredibly exciting to read. There is a big friend group within these books and found family aspects which makes it heartwarming.
Number 4: Binding 13 and Saving 13 by Chloe Walsh
This book takes place in Ireland and is based on the relationship between two characters, Johnny and Shannon who meet at Tommen College. Shannon comes from a troubled household with no support and barely enough money to pay for the school. Johnny is the sunshine who comes from a wealthy family with a loving and supportive family. He is the rugby star on the Tommen whereas Shannon frequently gets bullied. Once they have their meet-cute they continue to run into each other and the rest of the story the reader is rooting for both the characters. (Don’t be intimidated by the huge book and tiny words, it goes by too quickly).
Number 5: The Whisper Man by Alex North.
If anyone is a mystery or thriller lover, this is for you. The book switches from a father and son moving into a new house in a place called Featherbank where a child was abducted by who an investigator thinks was the infamous “Whisper Man.” He lures his victims out by whispering through their windows. The grieving father’s son gets suspicious and anxious when his son begins to talk to himself when playing with his toys or asks his dad to lock the doors. Be prepared to never open your blinds ever again.
