Homework should be banned at school. About 56% of students consider homework to be a primary source of stress. This statistic presents a serious issue that negatively impacts more than half the population. Students have reported that homework not only increases their personal stress and anxiety levels, but also the extent to which they experience exhaustion. These factors can lead to sleep deprivation, which negatively impacts abilities to excel in school and in sports/extracurriculars.
Shouldn’t weekends be a time where students can unwind and reflect on their previous school week after dedicating about 7 hours every day to school and work? Instead of providing students with a much needed break, they are forced to complete extra work, which makes it almost impossible for students to have a relaxing weekend. The pressure that us students endure after being overloaded with work can decrease our love or passion for school, and school is instead seen as a chore or burden.
Furthermore, homework takes away from time that could be spent doing more fulfilling things, like spending time with family and friends, and chasing goals. Instead of encouraging students to learn better, unnecessary amounts of homework makes students overwhelmed and detached from the things that bring them joy to have a fulfilling and balanced life. Banning or restricting large amounts of homework would promote the extent to which students live satisfying lives, both in terms of mental health, and academic and extracurricular performance.
In addition, many do not have necessary resources at home, including a quiet place to study, and someone who can help when the homework is too hard to understand. Without homework, a better and more fair environment is created when all students have the same resources to study and complete assignments. Doing this would encourage teachers to make the most of their class time, and make class more engaging and helpful for students, instead of relying on homework.
