As spring is starting and the weather is getting warmer, the spring sports season is finally here. For the freshman, it is their first year to be able to try out to play junior varsity or varsity sports. Hackley offers a wide variety of sports students can participate in, but some are more difficult than others to get into. For example, this year there are only two varsity spots available on the varsity tennis team due to only two seniors graduating from the team. This can make it very difficult for freshmen to make it into varsity as it is their first year and they don’t have the experience that sophomores and juniors have. Furthermore, sports such as golf only offer a varsity team due to the low demand of a junior varsity team. This can definitely make it harder for freshmen to get into the team because of the lack of a junior varsity team where they can gain experience so they can hopefully make the varsity team in the future.
One freshman that I interviewed that made it into varsity golf was freshman Henry Pascual. Henry made it to varsity after his second time trying out. He said, “As a freshman, I found it a lot easier to try out for varsity than trying out as an 8th grader.”. Getting into varsity as a freshman is great because Henry will be able to play at the varsity level throughout highschool, which will improve his skills drastically. Hackley offers a wide variety of sport options for the spring such as tennis, lacrosse, golf, baseball, softball, and track. Compared to most private schools in the Westchester area, Hackley offers more sport options for their students. This can help with students who aren’t interested in the most commonly played sports, but still want to play a sport during the spring season. A big advantage of having many sport options is that it gives students a chance to try out other sports that they might not have a chance to try outside of school.
