After a tentative start to the season boys varsity soccer was in contention to compete in the NYSAIS playoffs, but ultimately they fell just short of a playoff berth. On Friday, October 18 Boys Varsity Soccer hosted their last regular season game against Riverdale who won the Ivy league, and now is competing in the NYSAIS, with the game tied Riverdale scored to end the game, ending Hackley’s season finishing with a record of 4-5-5. However, the result of the season isn’t reflective of the success believed by players, and head director of athletics, Jason Edwards,
“Knowing what we had coming into the season and the amount of work that needed to be done to be successful, not just in wins and losses, but in regards to making sure our team plays as a team, I see this season as a huge success.” This year’s success was not determined by the final record of the boys’ performances, but by their growth, resilience, and constant effort.
“We did very well, and I’m very, very proud of our team’s efforts this season”. The incredible perseverance that the Boys Varsity Soccer team showed was reflective in the way they preserved after a rough start to the season, said junior left-winger Loukas Skipitarus.
“I think one of the greatest things about Hackley school is perseverance. We try to teach that, we try to instill that in all of our students, and that also takes place probably more profoundly on the athletic field. And again, the idea that our team came together during the season, went through some adversity early. I mean, they lost their first game, and then I think we tied, like, three or four in a row, and then we had a win, and then we had another tie, or a loss, and then we went on that nice little streak of three consecutive wins.” Edwards said.
Edwards said the boys came together after a rough start, and following the sting game they turned around and became very dominant. Although, this team would’ve fallen apart if not for their leadership from captains, and upperclassmen,
“Then on the field, they’ve been out leading goal scorers, getting a lot of assists, and just being like the best parts out there showing everybody how to do things. And then even in practice, they’ve been, like, always been the most focused in drills, whatever someone doesn’t understand something, they’re always there to, like, help them out, and they’ve been really good at leading our team to be as good as we can be,” sophomore goalkeeper Hayden Price said.
According to Price, the seniors, and captains helped lead the team, and steer them back in the right direction the whole season.
