For many people, the decision to initiate a cell phone ban at Hackley School was a poor idea, and only had negative impacts on students, but for others, the cell phone ban was a principled idea, and only had positive impacts.
“I think it has primarily negative effects because it prevents students from having a good time,” freshman Mateo Xatart said.
Xatart believes that the cell phone ban keeps students from having fun during their daily lives at school.
This statement was challenged by Freshman Cooper Voorhis. “I think I would excel more if I didn’t have my phone because it would be a lot easier to focus,” Voorhis said.
Cooper believes that his phone is a distraction for him when trying to concentrate, and he believes that the phone ban only has negative effects on students, contrasted with Xatart’s thoughts.
The rate of cell phone ban in schools has been going up in recent years due to the new discoveries about the ways cell phones negatively affect students at school.
“. I’m not going to lie, I think it actually has more positive impact than a negative impact because it reminds me a lot of my middle school, and my middle school was pretty fun.” Junior Loukas Skipitares said.
Skipitares believes that the phone ban enables him to have a better time in school. Without the constant distractions of the phone, he is able to build deeper connections with his friends that are not based entirely around a cell phone.
Freshman Rita Muriithi believes that to be able to connect and communicate with friends, having your phone on hand is vital.
“For example, you need your phone to get their Instagram handles or their Snapchat account or their numbers, and Socializing nowadays is very focused on things inside the phone,” Muriithi said.
Students have differing opinions about the initiation of cell phone bans in school. It is either believed that cell phones in the school environment are a distraction and limitation from forming deeper relationships, or that cell phones are vital in having fun at school, and that cell phones actually help you connect and communicate with friends.
