As the end of the school year approaches, spring has officially sprung. With the arrival of the spring the warmth, and the vibrance of Hackley returns, leading to new opportunities for students and faculty in their free time. That brings up the question, “What is your favorite thing about or to do at Hackley during the Spring?”
“I think sitting on Aiken Common is a really fun way in the spring to hang out because the entire high school community is together,” freshman Samantha Sarro said. As the weather starts to warm, and the sun is out, Aiken Common is a staple for the Hackley community for hanging out with friends outside. The turf fields, the shaded areas under the trees, the benches, and the basketball courts makes Akin the perfect spot for students of all interests to hang out on Akin with their friends.
On Aiken Common there is an abundance of options for students, one of them being hackysack, ninth, and eleventh grade English Teacher Mr. Canterino said
“Students have talked to Hacky Sack again. It was something that when I was here, we played Hacky Sack, but we did it on the upper quad, not Akin Common. So that’s one thing that’s been really nice. Hackley, I think Hackley’s property, and the outdoors at Hackley distinguishes it from all other schools nearby, and to see people taking advantage of that just enjoying each other, it’s always nice.” Hacky Sack is a pass time in which students juggle a small knitted ball usually filled with plastic, or metal beads, or even with dirt. Hacky Sack has been a common pastime for the past several decades, however it has seen an exponential increase in participants with a new movement among teenagers in high school across social media, and the country. This growth can be seen at Hackley with students across all grades participating.
“Probably play sack with my boys because we can learn moves and also have a lot of fun on skin,” said sophomore Jack Wilkins when asked about his favorite thing about Hackley during the spring. The combination of sports, and the spring weather has made Akin common a staple for Hackley during the spring.
